Course Description (according to the course provider)

Becoming a successful family mediator requires not only the knowledge of legal policies and procedures but also creative solutions to every family’s unique situation. This five-day program will build on the participants’ divorce mediation skill set through in-depth explorations of the following topics:

  • Cultural Issues in Mediation
  • Designing a Parenting Plan
  • Property, Maintenance, and Child Support in Divorce Cases
  • Mediating Financial Matters in a Divorce
  • Domestic Violence

Students may register for individual days or the program or attend all five days. Students who attend the entire program can receive a certificate in Advanced Family Mediation Issues from Northwestern University.

This 40-hour certificate program provides attorneys, therapists, counselors, financial planners, and others interested in the field of divorce mediation with skills and substantive knowledge. Participants will learn the skills and information necessary to become a more effective advocate or participant in mediation processes. Instructors make extensive use of exercises, videos, role plays and group discussion.

The program has been approved by the Academy of Family Mediators/Association for Conflict Resolution and is accepted by local courts for family mediation rosters.
